HyER member: Hamburg, Bolzano

Name of the project: CHIC – Clean Hydrogen in European Cities

CHICDescription: This project, which started in 2010, deployed 56 fuel cell hydrogen buses in European cities and in Whistler (Canada), and the construction of hydrogen refuelling stations for these vehicles. The aim of the project is to prove that fuel cell-powered buses can meet the demands of standard route operation as well as the determination of additional technical optimization potentials for buses and the infrastructure. Today, 36 buses are in operation in European cities.

In Hamburg, 6 buses (2 Solaris and 4 EvoBus) have been deployed on the Innovationslinie 109 in the city. The operation of the buses started in 2011. Hamburg also has a refuelling station, where the hydrogen is produced on site through electrolysis.

In Bolzano, 5 EvoBus have been deployed.

The project will last until the end of 2016 and the period after 2016 is under discussion.

The partnership includes 8 cities as well as 6 OEMs.

Funding: The project is co-financed by the FCH-JU under the FP7.
