HyER member: Aberdeen City Council

Name of the project: Aberdeen Bus Project

Description: The Aberdeen Hydrogen Bus Project is made-up of two separate European funded projects, High V.LO-City (which funded 4 buses) and HyTransit (which funded 6 buses and a refuelling station) both of which were supported by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking. Both the High V.LO-City and HyTransit project operations are due to finish in December 2018. So far, the Aberdeen Bus Project delivered:

  • production of hydrogen from a 1MW electrolyser
  • state of the art hydrogen refuelling station which is Scotland’s first commercial-scale hydrogen production and bus refuelling station
  • deployment of a fleet of 10 hydrogen buses which are operated by First Group and Stagecoach
  • development of a hydrogen safe maintenance facility

The buses only emit water vapour, reducing carbon emissions and air pollution.

BOC are the owner and operator of the station at Kittybrewster and lead in the HyTransit project.

Van Hool: supplier of the 10 fuel cell buses for the project

Bus Operators: First and Stagecoach operate the buses. First operate four fuel cell buses and Stagecoach operate six fuel cells buses.

Scottish & Southern Energy Power Distribution: control system in conjunction with network monitoring, to gain valuable learning on hydrogen’s impact on the grid.

Scotland Gas Networks: working with SSEPD on grid balancing

The other partner in the High V.LO-City and HyTransit projects are: De Lijn, Riviera Trasporti, Rigione Liguria, University of Genoa (DITEN), Solvay, Dantherm, Planet, PitPoint, FIT Consulting, HyER, WaterstofNet, Element Energy.

Funding: The HyTransit and the High V.LO-City have both received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) for the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative under grant agreement n°278192.

The Aberdeen Bus Project has also received funding from Innovate UK, Aberdeen City Council, the bus operators Stagecoach and First, the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution, Scotland Gas Network, for a total investment of £19 million.
