6. Baden.WThe region of Baden-Württemberg

In terms of both its surface area and population size, Baden-Württemberg is the third biggest of the German States. An area of 35,751 square kilometres supports a population of around 10.8 million people. Located in Germany’s Southwest corner and neighbour to three other German States, Baden-Württemberg lies at the very heart of Europe and shares borders with three European countries. Stuttgart is therefore the State Capital and is home to a population of around 613,000, making it also the biggest city in the State. The next in size are Mannheim, Karlsruhe and Freiburg. Alongside its urban conurbations, Baden-Württemberg is a predominantly rural State.

Baden-Württemberg is one of the leading economic regions not only in Germany but also in Europe: Home to internationally renowned corporations and thousands of successful small and medium-sized enterprises (SME´s), known for its innovative drive and inventive spirit, with a high level of productivity and low unemployment.

e-mobil BW:

As innovation agency of the State of Baden-Württemberg, e-mobil BW works actively to shape the creation of the electric mobility system. It promotes the transition to alternative energies, and it advances the industrialisation and market introduction of mobility solutions fit for the future, together with a network of partners from business, science and public authorities. This bolsters the location of Baden-Wuerttemberg in the long term as an economic and scientific region.

The state agency for electric mobility and fuel cell technology has different objectives:

  • Creating an efficient network and cluster management
  • Integration of SME´s in the innovation process
  • Active supporting of building practical frameworks on infrastructure and education

In addition to project coordination responsibilities for the LivingLabBWe mobil electric mobility showcase and the leading-edge cluster Electric Mobility South-West, the management of the cluster Fuel Cell BW represents a third, important pillar in the activities of e-mobil BW. The cluster Fuel Cell BW was established at the beginning of 2013, with the participation of four state ministries of Baden-Wuerttemberg and representatives from the economy, science and various associations.

Partners of the cluster Fuel Cell BW will concentrate their existing activities under a common roof, and develop new ideas and projects. Technically-based, targeted educational activities, joint events, and communications and public relations aimed at specific target groups are intended to actively inform people on the topic of hydrogen and fuel cell technology during the market preparation phase. The joint goal of all the participants is to implement various projects and schemes on the topic of hydrogen, and operationalise these close to the market, to advance the industrialisation process and with that, ultimately to mass produce.

The vision of the cluster is to advance the industrialisation of mobile and stationary fuel cell applications. This work focuses on added value and establishing jobs in Baden-Wuerttemberg. It provides active support for the transition to alternative energies and the introduction of electric mobility. The cluster makes Baden-Wuerttemberg the leading location in Europe for the manufacture, storage and use of hydrogen.

For exchanging knowledge and experience, the region Baden-Wuerttemberg wants to collaborate with European regions and to build up a network between economy and science. Benchmarks enable the possibility of local and regional arrangements of applications or standardisation of the fuel cell-infrastructure. It is necessary to ensure general standardisation, regulation and incentive systems to achieve a better acceptance of the future mobility.
