The administration of Rogaland County Council is located in Stavanger, Norway’s capital for the petroleum business since the early days, and fourth largest city. Stavanger has about 133 000 inhabitants and the total number of inhabitants in Rogaland county is approximately 472 000.

Rogaland County Council holds the competence for county policies within the following fields:

The electricity production in Norway is 98 % renewable (mostly hydropower) which gives a great potential when it comes to making transport more sustainable. Norway is aiming to become a low emission society. The introduction of zero emission vehicles is important to reduce the emissions from road transport. Reduction of local pollution is also a motivational factor for moving towards zero emission transport.

One of the projects Rogaland County Council is in charge of planning a 50 km busway (BRT-system) called “Bussveien”. The building of this BRT-system has begun. Bussveien will be the longest BRT-system in Europe and the core of the region’s bus system. The goal is to have zero emission buses on the busway.

Kolumbus is the public transport company in Rogaland, fully owned by Rogaland County Council. Kolumbus has started a pilot with autonomous buses (small electric buses). There are five battery electric buses in traffic in the Stavanger area. These are overnight charging buses and are the first five battery electric buses to run in Norway. Three of these are part of a EU project called Triangulum in which Rogaland Count Council participates.

Rogaland County Council decided to join HyER for exchange of experience and knowledge within the field(s) of hydrogen. Included is production, areas of use, potential as energy storage medium and other areas under development.

It might be worth mentioned an old – terminated – project on one of our remote islands. Two wind mills were installed in 2004, connected to a production unit for hydrogen. This project finished in 2010 due to technical challenges and reduced effect.

Furthermore the County Council did invest in a first generation hydrogen car in 2007, as part of an attempt to introduce a hydrogen automobile filling system and increased number of zero emission vehicles.
